The Topography and Surface Characteristics of the Larsen Ice Shelf, Antarctica, Using Satellite Altimetry

چکیده

A comprehensive survey of the Larsen Ice Shelf has been conducted using precise orbit and re tracked Seasat radar-altimeter data with editing of erroneous values resulting from intrumental artefacts. Contour maps of elevation and radar back-scatter (with absolute accuracies of I m and 2 dB, respectively) have been produced and it has also been possible to map rifts, grounding points, rough terrain, and about 30% of the ice shelf's seaward margin. Ice thicknesses derived from these elevation data show broad agreement with those derived from previous airborne radio-echo surveys. The maps of parameters measured by Seasat represent a very substantial improvement over those previously available . They thus provide a reference against which comparison may be made with a view to detecting substantial climatic changes. This is of particular interest since, as the most northerly major ice shelf in Antarctica, the Larsen Ice Shelf may be more sensitive than others to global climatic trends.

Altimetry backscattering signatures at Ku and S bands over land and ice sheets

Satellite radar altimetry, initially designed for studying ocean surface topography, demonstrated a strong potential for the continuous monitoring of ice sheets and land surfaces over the last 25 years. If radar altimetry is mostly used for its capacity to determine surface height, the backscattering coefficients provide information on the surface properties. Spatio-temporal variations of radar...

Glacier acceleration and thinning after ice shelf collapse in the Larsen B embayment, Antarctica

[1] Ice velocities derived from five Landsat 7 images acquired between January 2000 and February 2003 show a twoto six-fold increase in centerline speed of four glaciers flowing into the now-collapsed section of the Larsen B Ice Shelf. Satellite laser altimetry from ICESat indicates the surface of Hektoria Glacier lowered by up to 38 ± 6 m in a six-month period beginning one year after the brea...

Ice loss processes in the Seal Nunataks ice shelf region from satellite altimetry and imagery

The Seal Nunataks ice shelf (SNIS, ∼743 km in 2013) is an unofficial name for a remnant area between the former Larsen A and Larsen B ice shelves off the northeastern Antarctic Peninsula. Analyses using Landsat 7 ETM+ and Terra ASTER images from 2001 to 13 and ICESat altimetry from 2003 to 09 show it has retreated and thinned following the Larsen A (1995) and Larsen B (2002) disintegrations. De...

Mapping the grounding zone of the Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica using InSAR, MODIS and ICESat

We use a combination of satellite techniques (interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), visible-band imagery, and repeat-track laser altimetry) to develop a benchmark map for the Amery Ice Shelf (AIS) grounding zone (GZ), including its islands and ice rises. The break-in-slope, as an indirect estimate of grounding line location, was mapped for the entire AIS. We have also mapped ,55% of...

تخمین جهانی پتانسیل ژئوئید، توپوگرافی سطح دریا و ژئوئید بر اساس مشاهدات ارتفاع‌سنجی ماهواره‌ای

Using satellite altimetry derived mean sea level (MSL), geopotential coefficients in terms of ellipsoidal harmonics from recent satellite gravimetry missions, gravity potential values over a grid consisting of 33,486 points at global sea areas are computed and the mean value of the gravity potential at MSL is calculated as a new geoid’s potential value. In this way we have exactly followed the ...
